Nevada's first town — gold discovered in 1849

Gold was first discovered in Nevada in summer 1849 at Gold Canyon's mouth in present-day Old Town Dayton — a decade before the 1859 Comstock Lode silver strike that made Virginia City famous. Dayton was officially settled May 1851, making it Nevada's oldest permanent settlement.

🛤️

The Overland Trail ran down Pike Street

Pike Street in Old Town Dayton was the actual Overland Trail — the route tens of thousands of California-bound Gold Rush emigrants walked in the 1840s–1850s. Buying a home here means living on historically documented ground.

🎬

The final film of both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe

In 1961, Dayton served as a primary filming location for "The Misfits" — the last film completed by both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe before their deaths. Old Town Dayton stands largely unchanged from those scenes.

🏛️

Part of the Comstock National Historic District

Dayton is part of the Comstock National Historic District — one of the nation's largest. Its 1864 courthouse is among Nevada's earliest surviving structures. A museum operates inside an 1865 schoolhouse, the oldest in Nevada.

About Dayton

Dayton is Nevada's oldest town. Gold was discovered here in summer 1849 by prospector Abner Blackburn at Gold Canyon's mouth — a decade before the 1859 Comstock Lode silver strike that built Virginia City. The town was officially settled in May 1851, and its 1864 courthouse ranks among Nevada's earliest surviving structures.

Pike Street in Old Town was the actual Overland Trail, walked by tens of thousands of California-bound emigrants in the 1840s–1850s. In 1961, Dayton was a primary filming location for 'The Misfits' — the final film of both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. The Carson River flows through town; US Highway 50, dubbed 'The Loneliest Road in America' by Life Magazine, passes through as well.

Today Dayton has around 15,150 residents and the Lyon County market is the region's fastest-moving — 25 days to contract, sellers receiving 99.1% of list price. More space per dollar than Reno or Carson City, with larger lots and a slower pace.
