What doesn't get cheaper (be honest about this)
→ Median household income is ~$21K lower in Nevada ($75K vs $96K CA) — some remote workers aren't affected, but local job seekers are.
→ Sales tax difference is small — 8.7% avg CA vs 8.2% avg NV — not a major factor.
→ Car dependency increases in most Northern Nevada cities; public transit is minimal outside Reno.
→ Health insurance: without a CA employer plan, marketplace premiums in Nevada are comparable to California.

What actually changes when you cross the border
Things people don't realize until after the move.
🌤️
High desert climate — not beach weather
Reno averages 7.35 inches of rain per year — drier than Phoenix in some years. Summers are hot (highs in the 90s), winters are cold but sunny (far less gray than the Bay Area). Snow falls but road crews are fast. The air is dry.
✈️
Reno-Tahoe airport is real
RNO has direct flights to the Bay Area (~55 min), LAX, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, and New York. Southwest, United, Alaska, and American all operate there. You are not isolated.
🚗
You will drive more
Reno has a bus system (RTC RIDE) but it is minimal. Most residents drive. Parking is easy and free almost everywhere. If you are coming from SF without a car, buy one before you arrive.
🏔️
Lake Tahoe is 45 minutes away
From Reno: Incline Village in ~45 min, South Lake Tahoe in ~1 hour. From Carson City: 14 miles to Tahoe — the shortest Tahoe access in the region. Ski resorts (Mt. Rose, Heavenly, Northstar) are accessible as a day trip.
🏥
Healthcare is concentrated in Reno
Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno is the only Level II Trauma Center and the only dedicated children's hospital in the entire region. Carson City has Carson Tahoe Regional. Fernley and Dayton have no hospitals in town — nearest ER is 30–40 minutes.
📝
You need to establish Nevada domicile properly
California is aggressive about auditing former residents who claim Nevada residency. You need: a NV driver's license (within 30 days of moving), NV voter registration, NV vehicle registration, and demonstrable time spent in NV. A tax attorney for high-income moves is worth the cost.
Common questions
What people ask before moving
How far is Reno from the Bay Area?
218 miles by car via I-80 — 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic and mountain conditions. Direct flights from SFO to RNO run approximately 50–55 minutes. Southwest, United, and Alaska Airlines all operate the route daily.
Does Nevada have a state income tax?
No. Nevada has a constitutional prohibition on state income tax — written into the Nevada Constitution, not simply a current policy. It cannot be changed by the legislature alone; it would require a constitutional amendment passed by voters in two consecutive election cycles.
Is property tax actually lower in Nevada?
Yes — Nevada's effective rate is approximately 0.53% vs California's ~0.71%. On a $500,000 home that's roughly $2,650/year in Nevada vs $3,550/year in California. However, California's Proposition 13 caps annual increases at 2%; Nevada caps at 3%. Long-term California homeowners with deeply assessed properties sometimes pay less than the 0.71% effective rate would suggest.
Will California try to tax me after I move to Nevada?
California's Franchise Tax Board does audit former residents, especially high earners. You need to document that Nevada is your true domicile: change your driver's license within 30 days, register your vehicle in Nevada, register to vote in Nevada, update your bank and investment accounts to your Nevada address, and spend the majority of your time in Nevada. High-income earners ($1M+) should consult a tax attorney before and after the move.
What's the Reno job market like for California transplants?
Reno's major employers include Washoe County School District (~7,500 employees), Renown Regional Medical Center (~7,500), Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Apple. The area's tech and logistics sector has grown significantly since the Tesla Gigafactory opened in nearby Storey County in 2016. Remote workers are by far the largest single group of California transplants — the tax savings effectively represent a raise without changing employers.
